- When traveling, you have to ensure that you have all essential items. Clothing, shoes, toiletries, snacks, the list goes on an on. However, winter travel adds some stress and the need for extra essential items in the case that you were to break down on the side of the road, become stuck, etc. Ensure that you carry extra clothing in your car at all times, kitty litter can help you with traction in the event your vehicle were to become stuck, ensure water and snacks are kept in your vehicle. As well as, emergency blanket and blankets.
- Ensure that if you a traveling via car that you always have at least half a tank of gas at all times. This will help buffer incase you were to become broke down and need to run the heat, and if there are gas station closings.
- Travel safely! What do I mean by this? Well, when traveling by vehicle ensure that you are traveling at a speed in which you are able to safely travel. No speeding! Inclement weather can be extremely dangerous, especially when speed is a factor. According to the The U.S. Department of Transportation, one should slow down by approximately 50 percent in bad weather conditions.
- Wear layers when outside in the elements. Don’t be the person that wears a short-sleeve t-shirt, shorts, and cowboy boots in the middle of winter. Is it worth the risk of getting sick during your travel? Instead, wear and pack layers- long-sleeve t-shirts, sweaters, a coat, boots, warm socks, jeans, a hat and gloves are a must.
Winter Travel Tips for Flying
- If you are flying to your travel destination ensure extra time to make it to the airport in the event of inclement weather. Plan in advance, and plan for if there were a flight delay. Inclement weather is notorious for shutting down flights and causing long flight delays.
- Pay attention to road conditions. Road conditions can change at the drop of a hat from one area to the next there can be completely different conditions. It is important to pay attention to the road conditions and what may seem like a safe road can be hazardous due to slick conditions, icy conditions and black ice. Check local road conditions online.
- If flying to visit friends or family ensure that you DO NOT wrap the presents. These will be flagged by the TSA and will require them to open up the packages resulting in a lot of frustration for everyone. The reason it flags them is due to the wrapping paper- blocks the X-ray from showing what is inside the box.
