Traveling is a HUGE expense, but it doesn’t have to empty your bank account. Check out these 30 ways to save money for travel. I highly recommend having a travel budget set aside when planning for vacation and make sure to keep the funds separate from your checking account. Please note, it also helps to plan vacations in advance in order to be able to save up for the trip.
30 Travel Budget Tips
- First, make a budget and stick to it! You can’t really begin to save money and budget until you begin tracking and keeping a budget.
- Reduce the amount of times you eat out.
- Start meal prepping at home to cut cost.
- Cut back on unnecessary expenses.
- Check online or at local shops for discounted items, instead of purchasing things full price.
- Shop on the Clearance rack!
- Conserve electricity any way that you can. For example, make sure all lights are turned off when not in use. This is a big one in my household!
- Use apps such as Mercari to sell items you no longer use or to buy gently used items that you need. Check it out here to get started: Sign up for Mercari using the link below and get up to $30. Here’s my invitation link : https://merc.li/ZrgJfVb
- Use debt trackers and start paying off your debt.
- If overtime at work is an option, consider working a little overtime if possible.
- Start putting x amount into a travel savings account each week for your travel budget. Remember not to touch it!
- Host a Garage or Yard Sale
- Sell unwanted items on Facebook Marketplace, local groups or Ebay.
- If you are coupon-savy use coupons or even stockpile. Stockpile items are in high-demand so you could even sale at your hosted yard sale and make some quick cash and a BIG profit.
- If you are creative, make your own products and sell them.
- Use Credit Cards that have perks for using them. For example, I use an Orbitz credit card for all of my expenses and end up with about a week of free stays in hotels per year. Definitely a good way to reduce cost of travel and keep that travel budget lower. [Don’t use credit cards if you are bad about spending on unnecessary items, this could end up leaving you in the hole]. Credit Card rewards do come at a price. Make sure to review terms and conditions such as: annual fees, high-interest rates, spending terms, etc.
- Cut entertainment costs- If you don’t watch television often opt for less expensive streaming methods such as Netflix or Hulu.
- Cut back on expensive hobbies. Love fishing, but already have a ton of baits? Opt out of buying new ones for awhile.
- Find free things to do while traveling. There are usually many free things to do in most areas, spend some time researching.
- Opt for store brands when you can instead of buying usually “more expensive” products.
- If you are a smoker- cut back those smoking habits or completely eliminate.
- Cut back on soda consumption- this can be a huge cost if you are a regular soda drinker.
- Avoid Starbucks and similar coffee shops- At approximately $5/drink this would add up quickly. If you had 1 drink throughout the weekdays [5] it would save you approximately $100/mo.
- Take a minimalist approach- only have what you need and no more. Then, sell the rest!
- Rather than gifts for your anniversary, birthday, Christmas, etc. Ask for money instead in order to save for travel costs.
- Earn cash back for purchases you already make. A good example of this is Rakuten. Check it out here to receive $10 off your next online purchase of $25 or more. https://www.rakuten.com/r/ZIGZAG127?eeid=37141
- Get a reusable water bottle to cut back on water costs. Check out one of my favorites here- oceanbottle.co//?ref=bb-79wxky Did you know that every Ocean Bottle purchased means that 1,000 bottles that would have ended up in the ocean are collected? Now that’s a cause to get behind.
- Always keep your traveling money separate from your budget. If it helps, have it automatically deposited into a travel fund.
- Opt for a lesser expensive phone contract. Personally, I use Straight Talk a non-contact phone agency.
- Lastly, find a side gig- If you have a good following on social media try reaching out to brands and post in exchange for a fee.
